Daffan Homes’ Little Hunting Creek House in Alexandria has won the Top Ten Most Energy Efficient Homes Award at EarthCraft Virginia’s 4th Annual Sustainable Leadership Awards.The Little Hunting Creek House, owned by Patrick Fogarty, features solar panels for electricity and water heating, high efficiency HVAC, spray-foam insulation, energy star appliances and lighting, and green building products throughout. Combined, these efficiency features give the home a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rating of 38, which means it is 62% more efficient than a home built to current standard code. Specific features include:
- 16 Seer high efficiency heat pump with completely sealed duct system and an energy recovery ventilation system to bring fresh air into the home
- Solar hot water heating system with electric back up
- EPA water sense faucets and toilets throughout the home
- 2.5 KW photovoltaic array
- Energy Star certified light fixtures and appliances
- Sealed framing and sheathing with open cell spray foam insulation on the exterior walls and ceiling
- Insulated concrete walls below grade
- Low-E, double-pane, argon-filled vinyl windows
- Bamboo flooring and recycled content carpet
- Hardi-Plank siding.
